How do you clean the dark gunk around the door of a front loading washer?

I have a Frigidaire Affinity. I just noticed that there is black gunk stuck inside the ridges of the door gasket. I had been innocently wiping the gasket with sanitizer sheets thinking I was keeping mold under control. This is deep inside the fold and doesn’t wipe off. (It doesn’t smell like mold nor does it get on my clothes) ) It is stuck on and crusty. I can scrape it off with my fingernail but I don’t want to. Is there an "easy" way or special product I can use to get rid of it?

  1. I have a Maytag Neptune front loading washer & had the same type of buildup. Once a week, I pour Mr. Clean on a rag, then wipe the door gasket with it. The ammonia cuts through the gunk in no time flat. If necessary, I wash down the gasket twice a week. Ammonia based cleaners are great for cutting through the gunk.

  2. I would spray it with a cleaner like Mr. Clean, and let it set, then wash it with an old toothbrush. Make sure to wipe it or spray clear water on it to wash the residue off. Keep after it, maybe once a month do it.
